Congratulations to the Green Square project team on reaching a major milestone, completion of the new Joynton Avenue Creative Precinct. The former iconic South Sydney Hospital site has been transformed into a creative hub for the community to enjoy. The heritage listed Esme Cahill Building now known as the JACC (Joynton Avenue Creative Centre) building, was originally built in 1936 and used as nurse’s accommodation. In succession of the detailed refurbishment works, this building is now home to community and art centre spaces. Lahey’s aim for this Christmas fundraiser was to raise enough money for one new trauma bed for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick, the cost of each bed is around $7k. The hospital had identified the need to urgently replace 18 existing beds. Thanks to our amazing supply chain partners, contractors and generous staff we managed to raise a grand total of $23,279, enough money to fund the purchase of 3 new trauma beds!! Last week Lahey officially launched our Indigenous Employment Program in conjunction with Hutchinson Builders Statim-Yaga (Start Work) program. We invited all Indigenous employees along with Project Managers from all of our Sydney projects, to our head office in Pyrmont to welcome them into the Lahey family and reaffirm our commitment to ongoing employee mentoring and continued professional development. This Christmas Lahey once again raised money for the Sydney Children’s Hospital, The Sydney Children’s Hospital Emergency Department (ED) provides urgent medical care for more than 36,500 children each year from babies with severe infections through to teenagers with broken bones. With more than 100 children being cared for in our Emergency Department every day, the ED team need to urgently replace eight of our 18 ED Trauma Beds as these are now more than 8 years old so they are showing significant signs of wear and tear. Lahey Constructions has been awarded the contract for the new build and refurbishment of one of Sydney’s oldest public schools. The Alexandria Park Community School, originally established back in 1890, will be redeveloped and become the new home for the Central Sydney Intensive English High School. The rejuvenated facility will feature a new build three-storey teaching space with a gymnasium that will seamlessly link into the existing refurbished Block D building. The City of Sydney recently hosted an open day for the Green Square Community and Cultural Precinct. The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore gave an overview of the Green Square Precinct, including current and upcoming works, with Gadigal Elder, Uncle Chicka Madden, giving the Welcome to Country. The event was attended by over 150 members of the public who saw first-hand, the progress that is being made to reinvigorate and revitalise the area. The Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation has purchased two Pulse Oximeter Machines with the donations we raised at Christmas! Lahey’s Bid Director, Guy Tristram, visited the Hospital to experience first-hand what the machine does for the Hospital’s Sleep Medicine Unit. The machines are a simple and effective way to screen babies and children for potentially life-threatening sleep conditions by measuring oxygen levels in the blood. They help SCH identify which children need to be prioritised in sleep studies, and have dramatically reduced the extensive waiting list.
